Toney Atkins writes: Is it the end of the world? The Mars-world, that is, in 2014. (See the intriguing link above.) With asteroids seeming to be passing earth in greater numbers, a meteor exploding into a fireball over Siberia and unusual earthly phenomena, such as stormier weather patterns, more sinkholes swallowing homes and a man inside, plus a later one nearly swallowing a golfer, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, a melting Antarctica, the Universe seems to be sending us not-so-subtle warnings. Since the clock ticked over from 1999 to 2000, the abnormal has become normal. People seem to sense that all is not as it should be in the world, and in the recesses of our mind is a sense of helplessness that there is nothing we can do but pray, change ourselves and start spreading love and peace instead of ignorance, arrogance and hatefulness and quit blaming Bush, Obama and the terrible leaders and murderous dictators around the globe for our problems. If the world should end tomorrow, I pray that each one of us will be looking for good and doing good things and believing that making the earth a better planet on which to live begins with individuals who can face the end without negativity and guilt.

Men who have never passed a kidney stone need to read the CNN report, because I can testify the truth of it -- although I honestly can't speak on the childbirth pain thing since I have never been and never plan to be pregnant. I have experienced several stones, and none of them were fun. Even as I write, I have inside me a kidney stone that is so large that several doctors, including a specialist, say that I will likely be calling 9-1-1 if it ever tries to pass because it may get stuck in my urinary tract. Heaven only knows how long it has been there, but it has occasionally caused back and side pain for a couple of years. Sorry to be so graphic, but that's the way it is. There are treatments to break apart kidney stones, I am told, but all of them would cause some bleeding, so my specialist refuses to do it because I have been on blood thinner for more than two years and anything that he would do could, and I emphasize "could," cause me to bleed out, or so he says. The article at the above link gives some important information about symptoms, along with some steps individuals can take to prevent these more-than-pesky stones.

Unless they act by March 1st, billions of dollars in automatic cuts -- the so-called sequester -- will start to take effect. If it does, more than 2 million jobs could be lost, 70,000 children would be kicked off of Head Start, and 10,000 teachers' jobs would be put at risk.
With this fiscal crisis looming, what did John Boehner and Republican leadership do? They went on vacation, calling recess for the House this week even though Democrats voted to stay and work to avert this crisis.
This is no time for recess. It's time for them to do their job.
Demand Republicans in Congress come back to the table and work with the President to avoid this crisis. Sign the petition now.
The unbelievable thing is -- this crisis is completely avoidable.
The President has laid out a specific plan with detailed cuts to avoid the sequester and reduce the deficit in a balanced way, and Democrats in Congress have put forward a balanced approach as well.
But Republicans in Congress would rather see our recovery and middle-class economic security be put at risk than close one tax loophole for big corporations and the wealthiest among us.

Too many of their words, too many of their actions, too much of their obstructionism is plain to the not-so-dumb that Republicans in government are still trying to destroy the historic nation's first black president and attempting to make his every effort unsuccessful. This is a real shame. Republicans are showing their true faces: they are hateful liars who claim to have the best interests of the nation at heart, but they don't. No other president in my memory has been treated with the venom that has been spat President Obama's direction, and I admire him for standing tall and firm. He has accomplished much, and more could be done to benefit U.S. citizens if Republicans could put their racism aside, look at reality and what the American people want, and work in a bipartisan way to make things happen. Fox News perpetuates and sometimes provokes lies about the president and his administration and his goals. Most Americans don't keep up with politics and therefore are not aware of the dirty dealings that are going on in Washington, on conservative radio and Republican-supporter Fox News. Unnecessary falsehoods, outright lies and fears are spread, and the ordinary man believes those fallacies more than the truth because those in higher powers know they can control what people know and believe. If Obama were white, the situation in Washington, DC, might be completely different. Now it's almost completely disfunctional, and that is sad. How other countries look at us today must be much different than we did in the past when we behaved like a superpower. Maybe we will rise to the top again, but only if these extremist Republicans calm down, accept the fact that in this nation "all men are created equal"; if these people can be colorblind where the president is concerned and work WITH, not AGAINST, the black man that the majority of Americans voted to be president.
